How Often Should an Ontario IEP Be Reviewed?

An Ontario Individual Education Plan must be reviewed at least once during every reporting period. Review should be meaningful: the team considers progress, current needs and whether the program, goals and supports remain appropriate.

Review is more than changing a date

A useful review asks whether the student's strengths and needs are still accurate, whether supports are being used, and whether progress data supports continuing or changing the plan. An unchanged IEP may be appropriate, but the team should be able to explain why.

Events that may prompt an update

• new assessment findings or recommendations

• a change in achievement, attendance or participation

• a support that is not helping as expected

• movement to a new grade, school or program

• a change in placement

• a new transition need

• evidence that goals are too easy, too difficult or unclear

Parent review checklist

1. Compare the new IEP with the previous version.

2. Check dates, grade, subjects and placement information.

3. Confirm strengths and needs reflect current evidence.

4. Look for changes to accommodations and expectations.

5. Ask how progress was measured.

6. Confirm the next review point and who monitors each action.

7. Keep both versions with related reports and notes.

Questions if little has changed

• What progress data did the team review?

• Which supports are used consistently?

• Has the student become more independent?

• Are any accommodations no longer needed?

• Do goals need clearer measures or timelines?

• Is transition planning current?
