Confusion to Clarity: Cracking the Code of Accommodations

When your child struggles at school, it can feel confusing, overwhelming, and sometimes even isolating. You might hear terms like accommodations, modifications, or IEP thrown around and wonder, what does all this really mean for my child?

The good news is that understanding accommodations doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right guidance, what feels like a jumble of jargon can become clear and actionable.

What Are Accommodations?

Accommodations are adjustments that help your child learn without changing what they are expected to learn. Think of them as tools that level the playing field so your child can access the curriculum more successfully.

Examples include:

  • Extra time on tests or assignments

  • Sitting in a quieter space to focus

  • Using a laptop or audio books

  • Visual aids, checklists, or step-by-step instructions

These supports are meant to help your child show what they know, without the barriers of a learning difficulty or diagnosis getting in the way.

How Accommodations Differ from Modifications

It’s easy to mix up the two. While accommodations adjust the HOW of your child’s learning, modifications change the WHAT of their learning expectations.

For example:

  • Accommodation: Your child reads a grade-level text but gets extra time or a reader

  • Modification: Your child works on a simplified version of the text instead of the grade-level content

Understanding this distinction helps you advocate effectively and ensures your child is getting the right kind of support.

Your Role as a Parent

You know your child best. Your observations at home, what excites them, and what frustrates them are all essential pieces of the puzzle.

  • Ask your child’s teacher to explain what accommodations are in place

  • Make sure the accommodations are actually being used

  • Speak up if you notice something isn’t working or your child needs more support

Your involvement can make the difference between a support that exists on paper and a support that truly helps your child thrive.

Moving from Confusion to Clarity

Accommodations can feel like a secret code at first—but once you understand them, they become powerful tools to help your child succeed. They are not a sign that your child is “less than”; they are a way to meet your child where they are and give them the opportunity to shine.

At The Special Education Consultant, I work with families to decode school language, review IEPs, and make sure accommodations are meaningful and effective. Together, we can take the confusion out of the system and create clarity for your child’s learning journey.
